Having a “90’s Summer” has been trending on every social media platform this summer, but it’s often referenced as an experience for our kids, rather than for us. When we think about a 90’s summer, the following comes to mind: watching sunsets, laying in the grass, watching the stars, making s’mores, and swimming in any body of water you can find.
As grown women, all of those activities are still possible, so why do we find it so hard to live out those same summers? We think the answer is simple - all of those activities are great, but the true root of a 90’s summer wasn’t about what we were doing, it was about the fact that we lost track of time. We were carefree and allowed ourselves to be in the moment.
Nowadays, us women have so much going on at all times that it’s easy to feel like we’re on a schedule even when we’re supposed to be having fun. Girl’s night? We’re all worried about what to wear, what time to make the reservation and how we’ll split the bill. Day out on the lake? We’re overthinking whether or not our stomach is sucked in enough and if we’ve applied enough sunscreen to prevent all the horrid wrinkles we’re scared of. Makes sense why we can’t seem to relive those summers we cherish so much, right?
The key to reliving a 90’s summer as grown woman, we believe, is to find a way to get comfortable with letting go. Let go of trying to control every situation - because you can’t. Let go of trying to schedule everything in your life - because it’s not serving you (or your family). Let go. Two words that sound so simple, but in practice are highly complicated.
That’s why the other piece, we believe, is to really show up and be there for our own community of women. Be the friend that hosts dinner and play dates, and while you’re at it, lead your friends in allowing yourselves to let go. If one of your friends is fixated on something she has no control over, be the friend to help them let go. Or, if one of your friends is feeling self-conscious, be the friend to remind them that they’re okay to show up exactly as they are.
So there you have it - our idea on how to relive the coveted “90’s Summer” in the year 2025. Let go and be a good friend. Two steps that are not as easy as they sound, but very possible, especially when you have a community of women with the same goal around you.
